Elihu Spicer
Elihu Spicer was born in Noank, CT in 1825. After embarking on his first journey to sea at 9, he worked himself up to become a shipmaster, eventually becoming the captain of a steamship for the Union during the Civil War.
In his career in shipping, he began helping develop the local community most notated for his contribution to Mystic was The Mystic Noank Library, located just across the street from the Captain’s Mansion. He was a close business to the Mallory family, who became a prominent Mystic family and world-renowned ship builders.
Captain Spicer built the mansion in 1853, sparing no expense to include stained-glass windows, hand-carved wood finishes, and gold-painted murals. Although Spicer passed in 1891, we look forward to welcoming guests into his stately home.
